House Approves Barangay Term Extension on Final Reading; Liga Thanks Speaker Romualdez, Sen. Marcos, and Supporters

In a landmark move, the House of Representatives has approved House Bill No. 11287 on its Third and Final Reading with 153 affirmative votes, bringing barangay officials a step closer to longer terms in office.
The measure, titled “An Act Fixing the Term of Office of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Officials and Changing the Term of Office from Three (3) Years to Six (6) Years,” seeks to give barangay and SK officials a more stable and effective timeframe to serve their constituents.
Present during the session was the National Executive Board of the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, led by President Jessica Dy, who expressed deep gratitude to lawmakers for supporting the measure.
The Liga extended its heartfelt thanks to all congressmen and senators who rallied behind the bill, with special recognition to Speaker Martin Romualdez and Senator Imee Marcos, the principal authors of the legislation. Additional appreciation was given to Congressman Sandro Marcos and former DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos, whose tireless support and commitment were instrumental during the critical stages of deliberation.
Liga President Jessica Dy highlighted the importance of this development for barangay leaders nationwide: “This is a major step toward strengthening the capacity of barangay officials to truly make an impact in their communities. We are thankful to our lawmakers for recognizing the need for continuity in governance.”
While the measure still awaits further legislative processes, including harmonization with its Senate counterpart, its passage in the House is seen as a major victory for barangay leaders who have long advocated for longer terms to ensure more meaningful community programs.
The Liga continues to call on barangay leaders and stakeholders nationwide to stand united in support of the measure until its final enactment into law.
