As the 19th Congress nears adjournment, the National Executive Board (NEB) of the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, led by National President Jessica Dy, issued an urgent appeal to lawmakers to support the proposed extension of the term of barangay officials.

Currently on its Second Reading in the House of Representatives, the measure seeks to address the situation wherein barangay officials elected in 2023 would serve only two years—rather than the three years mandated by law—if elections push through this December.

The Liga emphasized that such a shortened term would disrupt governance and hinder the continuity of programs and projects at the grassroots level. In contrast, extending the term would provide barangay leaders with the stability necessary to implement long-term initiatives, strengthen community management, and maximize resources for the benefit of their constituents.

The organization expressed its appreciation to House Speaker Martin Romualdez and Congressman Sandro Marcos for giving attention to the proposal, as well as to former DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos for his consistent support and strong advocacy on behalf of barangay officials.

President Jessica Dy reiterated that the Liga will continue to push for the measure’s passage, underscoring that grassroots governance deserves sufficient time to thrive as the foundation of national development.
